OVERVIEW

The Legal Profession Stands at an Intersection.

As society grapples with urgent environmental, social, and governance issues, the role of lawyers in addressing these challenges is under the microscope.

The question is no longer whether lawyers should engage with ESG but rather how they can do so effectively, authentically, and holistically. ESG has become a critical and strategic priority for the legal profession, and lawyers must take a proactive approach in leading and guiding the transition to a just, equitable and sustainable society.

  • How will the results of the 2024 U.S. elections shape the future of ESG?
  • What strategies should private practice lawyers and in-house counsel employ to navigate the growing complexities of ESG litigation and greenwashing claims?
  • How are evolving ESG regulations and reporting requirements reshaping corporate compliance in the U.S. and internationally?
  • What role will AI play in advancing ESG initiatives, and how will it impact ESG legal advisory services?
  • How are in-house legal teams addressing ESG governance, risk management, and compliance in a rapidly changing regulatory landscape?
  • What are the emerging needs of clients in terms of ESG performance, compliance, and disclosure, and how will professional services adapt to meet these demands?
  • How should legal education evolve to prepare the next generation of lawyers for the challenges and opportunities ESG presents?
  • What role should the profession play in ensuring the rule of law and combating corruption in the face of global challenges to democratic institutions?

Legal ESG: New York, taking place October 15th, is an opportunity for law firm leaders, lawyers, the clients they serve, and today’s leading ESG experts to come together, learn from each other, and drive forward the ESG agenda. It's a chance to reflect on the progress that has been made, confront the challenges that lie ahead, and commit to a future where ESG is a fundamental part of the legal profession and those we serve.

Developing an ESG Mindset

Today, companies are stretching their resources and budgets as they figure out how to disclose metrics, deal with material risks, and capture new opportunities, all while storytelling about impact – without greenwashing! Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance issues cut at the core of business, threatening to upend industries, the markets, and capitalism itself. Yet, despite a renewed focus on ESG, companies struggle to understand its meaning and how it can help address new interconnected crises. Join us for the kick-off with the “benevolent troublemaker” Matthew Sekol, ESG and Sustainability Advocate working at Microsoft and Author of ESG Mindset.

How ESG, the Rule of Law and Corruption Connect

The Interdependent Triad: Rule of Law, ESG and Corruption

How can legal advisers ensure that their clients recognize serious business and greenwashing risks in countries with weak Rule of Law?

Besty Anderson, Executive Director of non-profit World Justice Project, will discuss their Rule of Law Index and how it impacts Legal ESG, with a General Counsel and a law firm leader to address how they are navigating this triad. Moderated by Leigh Dance, ELD International LLC.
